Angela Mellor in the studio

My work investigates the translucency of bone china and its potential for the transmission of light.

I am particularly interested in the effects of light on the landscape, especially in coastal areas where infinite variety of organic contours, tonal contrasts, and patterns provide a continuing source of inspiration.

Exploiting the characteristics of bone china and paper slip (a medium I developed during my Masters Research in Australia) I seek to re-interpret my visceral response to these natural phenomena.

The Glacial Light series references the stark beauty of Antarctica.

The Cretaceous Light series evolved from a study of fossils and shells embedded in rock.

The Ocean Light series developed over an eighteen month period while working with lighting designer Urs Roth in Perth Western Australia. The project was sponsored by Mondo Luce lighting company and supported by an Australian Council Grant. This culminated in a solo exhibition at Craftwest (Form) Perth, Western Australia.

The Celestial Light refers to the piercing light of the stars and the patterns they produce.

I ran a successful Contemporary Art Gallery in Ely, Cambridge for four years. In 2009 I decided to close the gallery in order to concentrate on developing my own work.
